Founded by Stavroula, LiTTLE MARiNER was born from a desire to capture the feeling of growing up beside the sea in Greece and translate it into beautifully made home essentials. Rather than following short-lived trends, the brand focuses on timeless design, responsibly sourced materials and exceptional craftsmanship.
Each towel is woven from GOTS-certified organic cotton using a plush terry construction and produced in Portugal by skilled textile specialists. Combined with OEKO-TEX certified fabrics and carefully considered colour palettes, the result is a collection designed to last for years while feeling luxuriously soft from the very first use.
To introduce you to the story behind the collection, founder Stavroula to talks about Mediterranean inspiration, sustainability, Portuguese craftsmanship, slow living and why the simplest everyday products can often become the most meaningful.
What inspired you to launch LiTTLE MARiNER, and how did your Greek heritage and Mediterranean upbringing influence the brand's identity and organic cotton towel collections?
I started LiTTLE MARiNER because I missed home. I grew up in Greece, surrounded by the sea and the slow rhythm of long summers, and after twelve years in London I realised I wanted to hold onto that feeling, not just remember it, but live with it day to day. LiTTLE MARiNER began as a way to do that, and to share it. Everything about the brand, the colours, the fabrics, the unhurried pace, comes from that Mediterranean upbringing. I wanted to create pieces that carry a sense of the coast into everyday life, wherever you happen to be.
There's a growing search interest in “luxury organic cotton towels” and “sustainable beach towels” how does LiTTLE MARiNER define what makes a towel both sustainable and timeless?
For us, sustainability and timelessness are the same conversation. A towel is only truly sustainable if you want to keep it for years, so longevity is built into every decision. Our towels are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, woven into a dense terry that softens rather than wears out, and the fabric is OEKO-TEX certified to be free of harmful substances. And we design quietly: no loud prints, no seasonal trends to date the piece. A LiTTLE MARiNER towel from this year should look just as considered in ten years. The most sustainable product is the one you never feel the need to replace.
Your towels and resort pieces have a very distinct coastal aesthetic. How do you approach colour development, and what inspired your signature palette of Coastal Blue, Dusty Rose, Sage Green, and Off-White?
Our palette comes straight from childhood memories of Greece. Coastal Blue is the colour I grew up surrounded by: the sky and the sea blurring into one another on a still afternoon. Sage Green is the olive trees, that soft silvery-green you see on every hillside. Dusty Rose is the bougainvillea that climbs over white-washed walls all across the islands. And Off-White is the houses themselves, sun-bleached and bright. I develop colours slowly, testing how they behave in natural light and how they sit beside one another, because most people will own more than one. The whole palette is designed to live together: calm, tonal, and easy to layer at home or by the sea.
Why did you choose organic cotton terry fabric, and what are the key benefits of this material compared to conventional towel production?
Terry is the most honest fabric for a towel, its looped structure is what makes it absorbent and soft. We chose organic cotton terry specifically because conventional cotton farming is known for its heavy use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. Organic farming avoids these, is gentler on the soil and water systems, and is better for the people growing the crop. The result is also a better product: the fibres are longer and less stressed, so the fabric is softer from the first use and ages beautifully rather than thinning out.
Consumers are increasingly looking for ethical and transparent brands. Can you share more about your decision to manufacture in Portugal and how this supports your sustainability values?
Portugal has one of the finest terry-weaving traditions in Europe, with generations of expertise concentrated in family-run mills. We chose to manufacture there because it allowed us to work closely and transparently with skilled people, in facilities with strong environmental and labour standards. Our manufacturing partner holds both GOTS and OEKO-TEX certification, which gives us real confidence in how our fabric is produced. It also keeps our supply chain short and accountable, we know who makes our towels and how. For us, ethical production isn't a marketing line; it's simply choosing partners we'd be proud to introduce you to.
What gap in the market did you see when it comes to modern bathroom and beach towels, and how does LiTTLE MARiNER differ from traditional homeware or towel brands?
When I was creating LiTTLE MARiNER, I wanted to make something that felt like a memory of Greece, of summer, of that particular ease and simplicity you feel by the sea. Most towels are either disposable and quickly worn out, or impersonal luxury pieces with no real character. I wanted to make something different: a towel with a sense of place and feeling, beautiful enough that you want it in your home, but well-made enough to keep for years to come. That's the gap we sit in: pieces that carry an emotion, not just a function.
How do you design towels that work both as functional everyday essentials and as lifestyle pieces people want to style in their homes, bathrooms, or on holiday?
The starting point is always that it has to work, it has to be absorbent, durable, and feel wonderful against the skin. But we design with the whole picture in mind: how it looks folded on a shelf, draped over a chair, packed for a trip. The tonal colours and clean finish mean it reads as a considered object, not just an accessory. Good design shouldn't ask you to choose between beautiful and useful. Our pieces are made to be used every day and to quietly improve the space they're in.
“Slow living” and coastal lifestyle aesthetics are trending search topics in interiors and wellness, how does LiTTLE MARiNER embody this way of living beyond just product design?
Slow living, for us, isn't an aesthetic, it's a philosophy of life. It's choosing fewer, better things. It's not rushing a product to market to chase a trend. We work in small, considered collections, we manufacture responsibly even when it's slower, and we design pieces meant to stay with you for years. The brand embodies slow living by practising it, in how we make decisions, in the unhurried mood of our imagery, and in encouraging people to buy thoughtfully rather than often.
What does the design process look like from initial concept to final organic cotton towel collection, and how involved are your manufacturing partners in Portugal?
It begins with a feeling or a memory, a particular quality of light, a colour from the coast, and a lot of looking before anything is drawn. From there we move into fabric: weight of the terry, density of the loop, how the colour takes to organic cotton. Our manufacturing partners in Portugal are closely involved from early on; their expertise shapes what's possible, and we develop samples back and forth until the hand-feel, absorbency, and finish are exactly right. It's a slow, collaborative process, usually several months from first idea to a collection we're confident in.
Sustainability is often used loosely in homeware, what practical steps does LiTTLE MARiNER take to ensure responsible production, materials, and longevity?
We try to be specific rather than vague. Concretely: our towels are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, grown without synthetic pesticides, and our fabric is OEKO-TEX certified for safety. We manufacture in Portugal in facilities with proper environmental and labour standards. We produce in small, considered runs to avoid overproduction and waste. We design for longevity, so pieces last years rather than seasons. And we keep our supply chain short and traceable. We're a young brand and still improving, but our rule is simple: only claim what we can stand behind.
Who do you imagine the modern LiTTLE MARiNER customer to be, and how has that evolved since you launched the brand?
The LiTTLE MARiNER customer is really anyone, anywhere, I don't think a way of living belongs to one type of person or one place. But if there's something that connects them, it's that they want to feel a little more and pause a little more. They're drawn to things that slow them down rather than speed them up. They notice the small, tactile details of everyday life and want them to feel good. When we launched I pictured a fairly specific “coastal” customer, but it's broadened into something simpler than that: it's for anyone who wants more calm and more presence in their day.
Towels are often overlooked in interior design, why do you think they've become more of a considered lifestyle product in recent years?
I think people have started paying attention to the things they touch and use every single day. A towel is one of the first things you reach for in the morning and after the sea, it's deeply tactile and personal. As interest in wellbeing and considered interiors has grown, people have realised these “invisible” everyday objects shape how a home feels. A beautiful towel is a small daily luxury, and it's been overlooked for far too long.
What role does texture play in your design philosophy, particularly when creating terry cotton towels and coordinating beach and home accessories?
Texture is central, with a towel, it's arguably the whole experience. The density of the terry loop, the weight of the fabric, the softness against skin: these are felt before anything else. We obsess over hand-feel during development, because a towel that looks beautiful but feels thin or scratchy has failed. Across our beach and home accessories we aim for a consistent tactile language, substantial, soft, and natural, so everything feels like part of the same considered family.
What does “coastal living” mean to you personally, and how do you translate that feeling into everyday home essentials?
To me, coastal living is a state of mind more than a location. It's an unhurried pace. It's natural light, simple materials, salt and sun. It's the quiet luxury of having time, and of being comfortable. I translate that into our pieces through softness, calm tonal colours, natural organic fabrics, and a sense of ease, objects that feel relaxed rather than precious. The goal is that using a LiTTLE MARiNER piece brings a little of that coastal calm into an ordinary day, even far from the sea.
Looking ahead, how do you see LiTTLE MARiNER evolving, are there plans to expand beyond towels into broader organic cotton home or lifestyle collections?
LiTTLE MARiNER has always been about a way of living, not a single product, so yes, we see the brand growing thoughtfully beyond towels into a broader world of organic cotton home and lifestyle pieces, alongside the resort and apparel pieces we already make. The throughline will always be the same: organic materials, responsible production in Portugal, a calm Mediterranean palette, and pieces designed to last. We'll grow slowly and deliberately, only adding something when we believe it genuinely belongs.
